A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean

Tori Murden is a trailblazing adventurer, educator, and humanitarian whose life story continues to inspire audiences around the world. As a motivational speaker, she captivates listeners with her raw honesty, strength of character, and unwavering belief in the human spirit. Tori is frequently hired to speak at educational institutions, leadership events, and corporate gatherings, where her message of perseverance, purpose, and compassion resonates deeply across diverse audiences.

Tori’s legacy as an adventurer is nothing short of historic. In 1988, she became the first woman and first American to reach the summit of Lewis Nunatak in Antarctica, and the following year, she skied to the geographic South Pole—again, becoming the first American and the first woman to do so. But it was in 1999 that she achieved global recognition by becoming the first woman and first American to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. These feats of endurance earned her multiple accolades, including the Peter Bird Trophy for Tenacity and Perseverance and the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Silver Horse Shoe Award for Courage, Determination, and Community Service. Her 2009 memoir, “A Pearl in the Storm”, recounts this epic ocean journey, offering an intimate look into the emotional and physical challenges she faced.

Beyond her adventures, Tori has built a distinguished career grounded in leadership and service. With degrees from Smith College, Harvard University, the University of Louisville, and Spalding University, she has held roles ranging from chaplain in a Boston hospital to director of a Louisville women’s shelter. She was the first full-time employee of the Muhammad Ali Centre, later serving on its board of trustees. Since 2010, she has led Spalding University as President, guiding it to become the world’s first officially recognised Compassionate University. Her influence also extends to national education and leadership through trustee roles at the National Outdoor Leadership School and Smith College.

Tori is hired as a motivational speaker not only for her extraordinary achievements, but also for the powerful lessons she draws from them. Her talks are not simply about success, but about failure, courage, and the quiet strength required to keep going. With grace, humour, and authenticity, she challenges audiences to live boldly, lead with compassion, and rise above fear.
