Nimco Ali is an influential British-Somali social activist, writer, and campaigner, recognised for her tireless work in advancing gender equality and confronting harmful practices that affect women and girls worldwide. She is widely sought after as a motivational speaker for her ability to engage audiences with powerful, personal storytelling and a clear, unwavering message about change. Known for tackling subjects often avoided in public conversation, she brings both passion and expertise to every stage, inspiring action and challenging audiences to confront uncomfortable truths. Her work resonates across sectors, from government and education to corporate environments, making her a compelling choice for events seeking impact and authenticity.
After studying law at Bristol University, Nimco co-founded the non-profit organisation Daughters of Eve in 2010 with psychotherapist Leyla Hussein. The group focused on supporting young women and girls, raising awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM) and promoting education as a tool for change. Her activism was shaped not only by academic insight but also by deeply personal experience, having undergone FGM as a child while on holiday in Djibouti. Determined to use her voice for others who could not speak out, she quickly became a prominent figure in the fight against gender-based violence, leading campaigns, engaging policymakers, and building networks of grassroots activists.
In recent years, Nimco’s influence has expanded on both a national and global scale. In 2018 she was named one of the BBC’s 100 Women, and in 2019 she received the International Women’s Rights Award from the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy. That same year, she was appointed an OBE for her services to tackling FGM and gender inequality, co-founded The Five Foundation to place the eradication of FGM on the international agenda, and published “What We’re Told Not to Talk About (But We’re Going to Anyway)”, a book amplifying stories long silenced by stigma. In 2020 she became the Independent Government Adviser for Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls, while also co-founding the Ginsburg Women’s Health Board, cementing her role as a leading voice for women’s rights.
Organisations hire Nimco because she combines personal courage with professional expertise, delivering talks that are as thought-provoking as they are empowering. She speaks with authenticity, drawing on lived experience and years of advocacy to inspire audiences to confront prejudice, demand equality, and drive social change. Her ability to connect emotionally while offering practical insight ensures she leaves a lasting impact wherever she speaks.
