Dame Kelly Holmes is a retired middle-distance British athlete. Continuing to hold the British record for the 800m and 1000m, Kelly has also been inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame and appointed DBE by the Queen. Kelly is now booked as a female motivational speaker to empower other women to speak out on their troubles and to participate in competitive sport.
Kelly was formerly a member of the British Army, performing duties as an HGV driver in the Women’s Royal Army Corps and a Physical Training Instructor. Kelly ultimately made the decision to return and compete in athletics, claiming two Olympic gold medals at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Unfortunately, during training for these games, Kelly was injured and suffered from depression and self-harming. Today, Kelly speaks out on the challenges she has faced as a prominent mental health activist.
The first Briton to claim a double win in over 80 years at the 2004 Athens Games, Kelly has also been honoured with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the European Athlete of the Year awards. By the end of her athletics career, Kelly had claimed an impressive seven gold, eight silver and four bronze medals and was also appointed as Honorary Colonel of the Royal Armoured Corps. Passionate about helping disadvantaged young people, Kelly is also the founder of the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust– a charity that groups world-class athletes to help empower and enable young, disadvantaged people to lead positive lives.
With such an inspirational story of success and adversity to her name, Dame Kelly Holmes is now a popular choice as a female motivational speaker. Having served in the Army, Kelly has experienced first-hand working in a male-dominated sector and now speaks on women’s empowerment amongst other topical subjects. A highly inspirational female athlete who continues to hold British records and has been inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame, Kelly empowers other women to pursue professional and competitive sport- proof that women can succeed equally as men.
