Finding My Voice: My Journey to the West Wing and the Path Forward

Valerie Jarrett is an influential female motivational speaker and accomplished leader with decades of public service and private sector experience. She is often invited to speak at events and conferences around the world for her unique insight into leadership, politics, women’s empowerment, and social justice. As the current Chief Executive Officer of the Obama Foundation and the longest-serving senior advisor to President Barack Obama, Valerie brings a wealth of experience and a deeply inspiring personal journey. Her talks often focus on resilience, civic engagement, and creating inclusive opportunities, making her a sought-after voice in today’s complex political and social landscape.

Valerie began her career in law after earning a degree in psychology from Stanford University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. Her first role in politics came in 1987 when she worked under Mayor Harold Washington as deputy corporation counsel for finance and development. She quickly rose through the ranks, later serving as deputy chief of staff for Mayor Richard Daley, and in 1991, she was appointed commissioner of the department of planning and development. By 1995, she had become chairwoman of the Chicago Transit Authority and soon after, led The Habitat Company as its chief executive officer. These early leadership roles laid the foundation for her entry into national politics.

Valerie’s influence expanded significantly in 2008 when she co-chaired the Obama-Biden Transition Project and was selected as a senior advisor to the president. In this role, she was responsible for public engagement and intergovernmental affairs. She also chaired the White House Council on Women and Girls and co-chaired the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault, underlining her commitment to gender equality and safety. Since 2021, she has led the Obama Foundation, continuing her mission to develop emerging leaders and promote civic innovation. Her board work, including roles with the University of Chicago, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and the Museum of Science and Industry, reflects her broad impact across multiple sectors.

Organisations hire Valerie as a motivational speaker because she brings a rare combination of policy expertise, executive leadership, and personal resilience. She speaks passionately about women’s leadership, racial equity, and public service, and has a proven ability to connect with diverse audiences. Her journey from local government to the White House makes her an inspiration to many, especially those looking to lead with purpose and courage.
